Metal Bunker, Iron
2020 ongoing series
Water-based ink on naturally dyed 100% cotton bandanna
21 x 21 inches approx.
This bandanna is hand-dyed with natural dye from chestnut bark tanned and iron.
This design was inspired by photographs taken by the cultural philosopher Paul Virilio for his 1967 book, “Bunker Archeology,” which looks at abandoned World War II bunkers along the coast of France and the psychic space of war. Created during the early months of the 2020 pandemic as a certain former president cowered in his private bunker. This special iron dyed edition is treated first with tannin that causes the iron bath to react and create a lovely multifaceted grey. Made for those days that need extra fortification.
